Shine Celebrates 40 Years!

On Friday 18th October, Shine held an official day of celebrations to mark our 40th anniversary. We had an early start on Friday morning when we hosted the broadcast of the PJ and Jim Breakfast Show on Classic Hits FM, LIVE from Shine Dublin. We opened the doors of our centre and invited everyone to come along, join us for breakfast and enjoy the fun and games.

Following a fun-filled morning, we made our way to Smock Alley theatre in Dublin City Centre for our official celebration where we were joined by Shine members, people who use Shine services, family members and relatives, our board, staff and volunteers, colleagues from the mental health sector and friends of Shine.

Our MC for the afternoon was Paddy Cullivan, with speeches from our Chair Kevin Jones and our CEO John Saunders. We were delighted to showcase the first ever screening of our new digital video series “Shine People” which received an incredible response on the day. We are excited to officially launch the series soon. We finished off the celebrations with food, drinks and music which gave everyone a chance to chat and mingle.

Introduction to Personal Development

Explore issues affecting emotional well-being and growth, including the management of feelings, stress, listening, communication and relationships

Effective Communication for Better Relationships

Build self-esteem and develop skills and awareness to improve communication in ways that help enhance the quality of life and relationships.

Personal Development, Cork, November 2019

This course involves learning about what you already know! By learning to listen better, we greatly improve our relationship with ourselves and others. Building self confidence in a safe atmosphere, that is supportive and fun. Learning to find time for you and the things you enjoy doing. Have you ever found yourself saying “yes” when you really wanted to say “no”? Learn the skills of saying “no” by being respectful to you and others. If you think this course is for you, please come along, you may surprise yourself by not only learning new skills, but enjoying it too.

Self – Advocacy, Cork, November 2019

Have you ever found yourself afraid to ask questions? Have you ever struggled to stand up for your needs? The goal of this course is to help people gain the skills of self-advocacy. It is for YOU to decide what you want, then develop and carry out a plan to help you get it. Know your rights and responsibilities. Learning new skills that help you to speakup, communicate and listen to others. If you think this course is for you, please come along!

Decision Making Capacity – A EUFAMI Study for Carers

The capacity of people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder to form rational decisions about their treatments and healthcare.

This is a study that aims to demonstrate that people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder can make appropriate decisions about their healthcare and treatment in daily life.
If you take care of a person with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, we ask that you take a few moments to participate in this study.

Classic Hits live from Shine Dublin, Friday 18th October

Shine are delighted to have the PJ and Jim breakfast show on Classic Hits fm presenting live from Shine Dublin on Friday 18th October to kick start our 40th anniversary celebrations.

Drop in to our Dublin centre at 13 Belvedere Court anytime between 6-10am. Or tune into Classic Hits 94 – 105 fm.

Family Supports Information Evening, Longford – 22nd October

For family members and those who support people affected by mental ill health.

Shine recognises the family as a very important factor in a person’s mental health recovery. The evening will provide information on Shine services for family members and highlight the Recovery & the Family course, designed to help families develop the knowledge and skills to support their loved one on his or her recovery journey.

When: Tues 22nd Oct: 7pm – 9pm

Our Regional Development Officer in the Northeast, Derek Pepper, spoke to Gerry Kelly on LMFM about family support, recovery for the family member and our Exploring My Way education programme.

Exploring My Way solely focuses on the position of the relative and recovery for the relative in a peer setting. Our programme runs once a month for 10 months.

Dundalk Positive Mental Health Art Exhibition

This year’s annual Art Exhibition runs from Monday 7th – Friday 11th October at the County Museum, showcasing the talents of artists who are living with a mental health difficulty. Free admission and all welcome!

This year we are looking forward to another successful event on World Mental Health Day, with the official Exhibition Launch Evening on Thursday 10th October at 6.30pm at the County Museum. For more info, download the flyer here.
